Treatment
Benign and malignant skin lesions and growths can nowadays be removed in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
This can be done with freezing therapy (cryotherapy), with laser therapy or with plastic skin surgery (dermato surgery).
What does the intervention consist of?
Small (up to 5 mm), benign lesions are frozen or lasered away with nitrogen. Larger growths and malignant tumours are surgically removed using state-of-the-art plastic techniques.
The removed malignant skin lesion is analysed in the lab with a frozen section. During the surgery itself, the lab examines the cut edges of the removed lesion. If tumour cells are found in these edges, the surgeon has to cut further until the lesion is removed completely. Indeed, many malignant skin tumours (baso, spino, epithelioma) have outliers, which are invisible to the naked eye. This innovative MOHS technique thus guarantees complete removal of the skin cancer. A similar technique is also used for melanomas.

Important information
Scar
Scarring depends on many factors (see 'scar correction'). Certain areas such as the face, heal very well without noticeable scars.
Recovery
You can usually resume your activities (e.g. work) the same day.
Anaesthetic
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. A mild sedation anaesthetic may be applied on request.
Precautions
If you take blood-thinning medications, please inform your plastic surgeon in advance. (e.g. acetylsalicylic acid, asaflow, cardioaspirin, dipiridamole, plavix, sintrom, marevan and others).
The local anaesthetic also contains a drug to avoid bleeding and bruising as much as possible.
