With age, the skin on the neck or chin also slackens. A neck correction or double chin lift can then help correct the excess skin with wrinkles. A neck lift involves smoothing the skin on the neck and double chin. Usually, a neck lift is done in combination with a facelift, because in many cases the skin of the face is also sagging and ageing. In some cases, a double chin is also involved.
How is a neck lift performed?
First, liposculpture is performed on the neck and double chin. This liposculpture ensures that all the subcutaneous fat is removed and that the remaining skin can be tightened even more. Not only the skin, but also the underlying neck muscles are tightened, with lifting loops, against gravity.

Precautions
During the operation :
- Your plastic surgeon performs the operation in collaboration with experienced qualified nurses.
- Even with local anaesthesia, you are continuously monitored : automatic blood pressure readings, oxygen saturation measurement and an electrocardiogram ensure maximum safety.
- Local anaesthesia limits pain and ensures minimal blood loss and less bruising.
Before the operation :
- Wash your hair thoroughly to reduce bacteria on the skin.
- Do not use blood-thinning medication (such as acetylsalicylic acid, asaflow, or plavix) without consulting your doctor. If you are taking these medications, discuss this with your surgeon beforehand.
- Report any health conditions, such as smoking or diabetes, so they can be taken into account during preparation.
After the operation :
- You will receive the personal mobile number of your plastic surgeon. This way, you can always contact him in case of questions or uncertainties, providing you with a safe and reassuring feeling.
Scar
A neck lift uses the modern MACS technique (minimal access cranial suspension lift). This method results in a short and almost invisible scar, located in front of the ear and ending in the hair. Thanks to subcutaneous sutures that dissolve on their own and the use of skin glue, there are no visible sutures. The lifting effect is maximum, and afterwards the scar is virtually invisible.
Anaesthetic
With the refinement of surgical technique and strong advances in anaesthesia in recent years, a neck lift is performed under local anaesthesia. A short-acting sedative is administered to nervous patients. This sedation can come in several degrees, up to and including a sleeping anaesthetic. In any case, classical anaesthesia with intubation is not necessary.
Recovery
After the neck lift, you can go home the same day. Any discomfort in the first 24 hours can be relieved with painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. The pain quickly subsides after that.
The day after the operation :
- You will return to the clinic for an initial wound check-up.
- The pressure dressing is removed, the wound is disinfected and, if present, the drainage tube is removed.
From then on, a new dressing is no longer necessary, and you may wash your hair again. This often gives an immediate feeling of freshness. You disinfect the wound seam yourself twice a day with isobetadine. As only subcutaneous sutures have been used, no wires need to be removed.
The first week after surgery :
- The neck may be a bit swollen. To camouflage this, you can wear a scarf.
- Avoid heavy physical exertion and lifting.
Scar care :
- Massage the scar daily with an oily cream, such as Nivea hand cream, day cream, almond oil, scar ointment or silicone ointment. This helps keep the skin supple and supports the healing process.
- Thanks to the special subcutaneous suture technique and the strategic placement of the incisions (near the ear and in the hair), the scar becomes almost invisible. The healing process may vary from person to person.
Swelling and bruising :
Although swelling and bruising are normal, they disappear in the first weeks after surgery. The use of ice frictions and creams against bruising usually offers little effect but is not harmful.
Possible risks
After a neck lift, the skin may be less sensitive, especially in front of the ear. However, this is temporary. After a few weeks and in some cases after a few months, the fuzzy feeling disappears and the skin feels normal again.
In smokers, healing can be slower, with a lot of crusting on the wound. An at least temporary smoking cessation is therefore strongly recommended.
