Liposculpture (liposuction)

Treatment

Even after you have lost weight, there may be areas that are resistant to your dieting attempts. In women, these problem areas concentrate mainly around the hips - the so-called love-handles - the abdomen and the thighs. In men, the abdomen, hips (swimming bands) and sometimes the chest are prone to fat.

Liposuction is then the technique of choice to correct your figure locally and get rid of disturbing, localised fat deposits. A new silhouette with beautiful, taut body contours is once again within reach. Liposculpture, or the subcutaneous removal of fat, is one of the most popular procedures.

If you are overweight (from dress size 46), liposculpture is not indicated. In this case, it is recommended to tackle the excess kilos first with a diet.

Which zones are eligible?

The most popular areas where excess fat is removed are the hips, abdomen (upper and lower abdomen) and inner thighs. But also a double chin or breasts in men, can be successfully treated with liposculpture. Or the knees.

Arms, calves and ankles are not eligible for liposculpture. Usually, the result is not satisfactory and, in addition, blood flow to the limb may be compromised. The front of the thigh is also less suitable for treatment, given the risk of the 'wave plate' effect.

How is liposculpture performed?

The areas are first injected with a solution. This mixture consists of substances that dissolve the fat and prevent bleeding and pain. This technique is also called tumescence technique. Then the excess fat is aspirated layer by layer with a fine tube : the area is sculpted, hence the term liposculpture. This suctioning is done using very fast vibrations of the suction cannula. This is also called vibroliposculpture. The other term liposuction refers to an outdated technique where the same thing is done, but with thick cannulas and under general anaesthesia, fat is sucked out. This technique is much more painful and with a higher risk of bleeding.

Important information

scar

Scar

Liposculpture does not leave a scar. This is because only small 4-mm incisions are made, through which the excess fat is sucked out. Moreover, these small incisions are made in places where they are not noticeable such as in skin folds, the groin and belly button.

risks

Possible risks

Liposculpture is one of the safest surgeries. Infection almost never occurs. Indeed, the procedure is performed in a strictly sterile environment. Moreover, the small holes through which the aspiration cannula is inserted heal smoothly.

To ensure smooth body contours after the procedure, liposculpture involves aspirating the fat layer by layer with a fine aspiration cannula. The risk of a wave plate effect or pitting is thus avoided.

recovery

Recovery

You can already go home one hour after the procedure. The local anaesthetic continues to take effect for several hours. When the anaesthetic wears off, the treated areas may be painful and stiff. You can relieve the pain with classic painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol.

The day after the procedure, it is sometimes difficult to stand up straight or walk around. When you have had the area around the abdomen treated, you may feel like you have done too many abdominal exercises. This feeling disappears after a few days.

Sometimes fluid leaks from the holes where the cannula has been. This is normal. It helps to put pads in your pantyhose. To avoid stains on your mattress, we recommend using a good mattress protector.

After your liposculpture, you must wear elastic tights for 1 month, day and night. This is very important for the final result. Indeed, due to the pressure, the tights ensure that the subcutaneous space from which the fat was removed does not fill up with fluid and blood. This allows the skin to reattach itself nicely to the underlying muscles.

If you have a sedentary job, you can usually return to work after one or two days.

Sport is allowed as soon as you can. Exercise improves blood flow, making the postoperative swelling disappear faster. Yellow-blue spots may persist for 2 to 3 weeks. Baths are allowed after only 2 days. Sunbed only after 1 month.

After 2-3 weeks, the blue spots disappear and the injected fluid is absorbed. Only then will you see the effect of liposculpture.

precautions

Precautions

All our procedures are performed in the safest conditions by the plastic surgeon.

During the procedure, the surgeon provides continuous monitoring (automatic repetitive blood pressure readings, constant oxygen saturation readings, electrocardiogram).

Measures for sterility are strictly observed. During surgery, a light antibiotic is administered preventively to avoid infection. Only this procedure guarantees the highest possible safety for you as a patient.

During your possible overnight stay at the clinic, qualified nurses will watch over you.
If you are taking blood-thinning medications, please inform the doctor in advance (e.g. acetylsalicylic acid, asaflow, cardioaspirin, dipiridamole, plavix, sintrom, marevan and others).

After your procedure, you will be given your plastic surgeon's personal mobile phone number so that you feel safe.

anaesthetic

Anaesthetic

Usually, local anaesthesia is sufficient. With a sedation anaesthetic, it is possible to aspirate a little more fat. In any case, classic anaesthesia is not necessary. After the procedure, you will feel much fitter as you do not suffer the unpleasant side effects of a traditional anaesthetic. An overnight stay at the clinic is therefore unnecessary.
