Breast reduction

Treatment

Breasts that are too large and heavy are a real torment for some women. You often feel that your breasts are not in harmony with the rest of your body and they undermine your self-confidence. The weight of your bosom bothers you when exercising and finding nice clothes and lingerie is frustrating. Most of the time, bra straps cut into your shoulders and you have back and neck pain. A breast reduction can be a solution here. A new and smaller cup size will give you back the confidence and freedom of movement you need.

How does breast reduction happen?

Breast reduction involves removing not only excess glandular tissue, but also excess skin. The nipple is lifted higher and usually reduced in size. The mammary gland is sculpted into the desired shape and attached to the pectoral muscle. This prevents further sagging. For extremely heavy breasts, another technique may be indicated.

Important information

scar

Scar

A breast reduction cannot be done without a scar. Currently, the 'vertical scar technique' is the standard. The former anchor-shaped scar is reduced to just a vertical scar. The scar around the nipple does not change. With time, this scar does fade.

risks

Possible risks

If you are healthy, there are hardly any risks associated with this procedure.

Healing may be made more difficult if you smoke and/or you are obese. Due to reduced tissue perfusion, the nipple heals with a lot of crusting and the vertical scar will also have more difficulty healing. In this case, daily wound care with isobetadine ointment is necessary. With or without these complications, the final aesthetic result is just as good. Your plastic surgeon has mastered the skill to expertly address these wound problems.

recovery

Recovery

A breast reduction is done in the day clinic. Before you are allowed to go home, the drainage tube is removed from the wound and you are given a new dressing.

Usually, you will feel little pain after the procedure. Any discomfort will be relieved with classic painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.

After a breast reduction, you will be incapacitated for 1 to 2 weeks. You will receive a certificate for this. We recommend taking it easy for the first week after the operation.

All sutures dissolve on their own and therefore do not need to be removed afterwards. After the procedure, you will have to wear a support bra for 6 weeks during the day. An elastic sports bra with a wide band and appropriate cup size will do the trick. After that, you can wear your normal lingerie again. Showering is possible after two weeks.

The plastic surgeon renews the dressing himself after a week. At home, you make sure the bandage stays nicely closed.

precautions

Precautions

All our procedures are performed in the safest conditions by the plastic surgeon.

During the procedure, the surgeon provides continuous monitoring (automatic repetitive blood pressure readings, constant oxygen saturation readings, electrocardiogram).

Measures for sterility are strictly observed. During surgery, a light antibiotic is administered preventively to avoid infection. Only this procedure guarantees the highest possible safety for you as a patient.

During your possible overnight stay at the clinic, qualified nurses will watch over you.

If you are taking blood-thinning medications, please inform the doctor in advance (e.g. acetylsalicylic acid, asaflow, cardioaspirin, dipiridamole, plavix, sintrom, marevan and others).

After your procedure, you will be given your plastic surgeon's personal mobile phone number so that you feel safe.

anaesthetic

Anaesthetic

As breast reduction is a fairly extensive procedure, it is done under general anaesthesia for your comfort. It is a light anaesthetic, just enough to keep you pain-free asleep until the procedure is over. Five minutes after the end of the operation, you are already awake and approachable again. So you no longer remain asleep or drowsy for hours as with previous anaesthesia. An additional local anaesthetic also ensures that blood loss is minimal and you feel little pain shortly after the procedure.
